In an official event in China, Chinese Xiaomi launched two new smartphones in the Redmi series called the Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus. Both the device comes with a fingerprint scanner on the rear side.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Price
The Xiaomi Redmi 5 is priced at 799 yuan (around $120 for the 2GB RAM + 16GB internal storage variant, 899 yuan (around $135) for the 3GB RAM + 32GB internal storage options.
Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus Price
The bigger Redmi 5 Plus is priced at 999 yuan (around $151) for the 3GB RAM + 32GB internal storage option and the Redmi 5 Plus with 4GB RAM + 64GB inbuilt storage variant is priced at 1299 yuan (around $195). Both the devices will be available in Black, Light Blue, Gold and Rose Gold colour options and will be available for sale in China starting from December 12th.
The Xiaomi Redmi 5 comes with a 5.7-inch HD+ 18:9 2.5D curved glass display with 450 nits Brightness, 72% NTSC Color Gamut, 1000: 1 Contrast Ratio and 1440 × 720 pixels resolution. It is powered by a 1.8GHz octa-core Snapdragon 450 14nm Mobile Platform with Adreno 506 GPU. It has two variants with 2GB RAM + 16GB internal storage and 3GB RAM + 32GB internal storage with both supporting expandable storage up to 128GB with microSD card slot. It runs on the Android 7.1.2 (Nougat) with MIUI 9 and supports Hybrid Dual SIM.
It features a 12-megapixel rear camera with LED Flash, 1.25μm pixel size, f/2.2 aperture, PDAF along with a 5-megapixel front-facing camera with LED flash. A 3300mAh battery is available for backing up and connectivity options include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS + GLONASS. It comes with a fingerprint sensor on the rear side and has an infrared sensor as well. It measures 151.8 × 72.8 × 7.7mm and weighs 157 grams.
The bigger Redmi 5 Plus features a 5.99-inch Full HD+ 18:9 2.5D curved glass display with 450 nits Brightness, 84% NTSC Color Gamut, 1000: 1 Contrast Ratio and 2160 × 1080 pixels resolution. It is powered by a 2GHz octa-core Snapdragon 625 14nm Mobile Platform with Adreno 506 GPU. It comes with 3GB of RAM + 32GB internal storage capacity, and 4GB RAM + 64GB internal storage with both variants supporting expandable storage up to 128GB with a microSD card slot. It runs on Android 7.1.2 (Nougat) with MIUI 9 on top and supports Hybrid Dual SIMs.
It features a 12-megapixel rear camera with dual-tone LED Flash, 1.25μm pixel size, f/2.2 aperture, and PDAF along with a 5-megapixel front-facing camera with LED flash. It is backed up by a 4000mAh battery and connectivity options include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n (2.4GHz + 5GHz), Bluetooth 4.2, GPS + GLONASS. It also comes with a fingerprint sensor on the rear side and it also has an infrared sensor available. It measures 158.5 x 75.45 x 8.05mm and weighs 180 grams.
Redmi 5 Plus leaked Renders
A Weibo user shared leaked images from the device that confirm the 5.99-inch 18:9 display for the device. The device leaked on Weibo is the Redmi 5 Plus with a 4000 mAh battery inside. The Plus variant will have upgraded specifications from the general Redmi 5 model. The settings menu from the device’s leaked images confirms that the Redmi 5 Plus comes with a 5.99-inch full-HD+ 18:9 full-view display with 2160 x 1080 pixels resolution.
It has 64GB of inbuilt storage capacity and comes with a 4000mAh battery. The device has a 12-megapixel rear camera and it runs on the MIUI 9 based on Android 7.1.2 Nougat OS out of the box. It will have hybrid dual SIM support and is code name “Vince” in the leaked image. There are two bigger speaker grills available at the bottom along with the Type-C port.
Xiaomi Redmi 5 TENAA
The Chinese company also announced that it will announce both the devices on December 7th in China in an official event. According to the company’s teasers, both the new Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus will feature an 18:9 aspect ratio display. Redmi 5 has also received the TENAA approval confirming the specifications and images. At TENAA, there are two devices listed with model numbers MDT1 and MDE1 and both come with 18:9 displays with similar designs like we saw in the leaked images of both and both were expected to be the variants of Redmi 5 smartphone.

The device has a 12-megapixel rear camera and it runs on the MIUI 9 based on Android 7.1.2 Nougat OS out of the box. It will have hybrid dual SIM support. According to TENAA, the Redmi 5 Plus will have a 5.9-inch TFT Full-HD+ display with a resolution of 2,160 x 1,080 and an 18:9 aspect ratio.
It will be powered by a 2.0GHz octa-core processor that could be the MediaTek Helio P25 or Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 or 660. It will feature a 12-megapixel rear camera with dual-tone LED flash and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. It will run on Android 7.1.2 Nougat and will be backed up by a 4,000mAh battery.
It will have two variants with 3GB RAM + 32GB inbuilt storage and 4GB RAM + 64GB inbuilt storage capacity with both offering MicroSD card expandable storage up to 128GB storage. It comes with a fingerprint sensor and an infrared sensor as well. Connectivity options include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 ac (2.4GHz + 5GHz), Bluetooth 4.2, GPS + GLONASS. It measures 158.5 x 75.45 x 8.05mm and weighs 179.5 grams. It will be available in Black, Rose Gold, Gold, White, Blue, Red, Pink, Gray and Silver colour options.
Xiaomi’s Indian division has started teasing the launch of the Redmi 5 smartphone for India to kick start the launches of 2018. Xiaomi has recently become the popular smartphone company in India defeating Samsung in terms of sales and has launched the Redmi 5a with a price tag of just Rs. 4999 the company is also expected to price the new Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus aggressively for the Indian market again. The Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus are also expected to be launched as Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Plus for the Indian market as per the rumours but we have to wait for the event for confirmation.
